RICHMOND, Ky. – Eastern Kentucky’s volleyball team is one of three Ohio Valley Conference squads competing for the final two spots in the league tournament on the final weekend of the regular season. The Colonels will host regular season conference champion Jacksonville State on Friday at 7 p.m. EKU will face Tennessee Tech on Saturday at 4 p.m.
The Colonels (7-18, 6-9 OVC) have total control of their own destiny. If Eastern wins its two weekend matches and a possible make-up match against Eastern Illinois next week, then EKU is assured of one of the six spots in the OVC tournament.
Eastern Kentucky, Tennessee Tech and Southeast Missouri are battling for the final two spots. TTU is 9-7 in league play and can clinch a tournament berth by defeating Morehead State on Friday, or Eastern on Saturday. SEMO is 8-9 in the OVC and will play its final league match on Friday at Eastern Illinois. If the Redhawks lose their final match, EKU could still make the tournament with one more loss, but because of tie breaking procedures that loss cannot be to Jacksonville State. A loss to JSU on Friday would completely eliminate the Colonels from contention.
The Colonels kept their postseason hopes alive by defeating Tennessee State 3-2 on Tuesday. The win was the first for Eastern away from McBrayer Arena this season.
Three players recorded double digit kill totals for the Colonels.
Lauren Snyder led the way with 18 kills. She also had 13 digs and three blocks.
Lindsey Loescher contributed 15 kills and 21 digs.
Autumn Harms finished with 13 kills, a .370 attack percentage and five blocks.
Jacksonville State will bring an undefeated conference record into McBrayer Arena on Friday. With a 16-0 league mark, the Gamecocks have already clinched the regular season championship, the No. 1 seed and the right to host the OVC tournament. JSU is 23-5 overall.
In their first meeting of the season at Jacksonville, the Gamecocks shutout Eastern Kentucky 3-0. JSU has won 17 straight matches and haven’t lost since falling to North Texas on Sept. 12.
It has been a season of streaks for Tennessee Tech. The Golden Eagles started the season with one win in their first 12 matches, including a seven-match losing skid. Then TTU won seven of its next eight matches. Now Tech has lost three of its last five heading into the weekend.
