RICHMOND, Ky. – Eastern Kentucky suffered a 70-48 loss to Morehead State on Saturday at McBrayer Arena.
Sophomore
Nadia Mossong finished with nine points and 11 rebounds the Lady Colonels (6-19, 3-13 OVC). Freshman
Kayla Drake also scored nine points.
Brittany Pittman finished with 16 points, 11 blocks and grabbed eight rebounds for the Eagles (16-12, 10-6 OVC). Ashley Martin and Tiffanie Stephens each recorded 10 points for the Eagles.
The Lady Colonels jumped out to a quick lead, scoring the first eight points of the game. After being honored in a pre-game ceremony, senior
Ilona Muszak started for the second time in her career. She wasted little time making an impact, knocking down a three-pointer 39 seconds into the game.
Sarah Fraser-Jones followed with a trey of her own and Drake connected on a jumper to complete the quick start.
A second three-pointer by Muszak, with 11:49 remaining in the first half, made it a 15-8 lead for EKU.
Morehead State closed the deficit to within two five times, before taking the lead, 27-26, on a Tiffany Hamilton lay-up with 1:58 to go before intermission. The Eagles closed the first half on a 10-0 run and led by six, 32-26, at the break.
The Eagles scored the first four points of the second half to push their lead to double figures, 36-26. Seven unanswered by Morehead State pushed the visitor’s lead to 43-29 with 13:14 left in the game. Martin’s three-pointer with 11:36 to go gave MSU a 17-point advantage, 48-31.
A quick 6-0 run by the Lady Colonels cut the deficit to 11, but Eastern wouldn’t get any closer. Drake’s jumper capped the short run and made it a 48-37 game with 9:54 to play.
Morehead State shot 43.6 percent for the game. Eastern Kentucky made only 25 percent of its shots in the second half and 29 percent for the game. EKU shot 16.7 percent (5-for-30) from behind the three-point arc.
MSU committed four more turnovers (17-13) than Eastern, but the Eagles held a 17-6 advantage in points off turnovers.
The Lady Colonels will conclude the regular season with a two-game road trip next week. EKU plays Tennessee-Martin on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. ET. Eastern takes on Murray State on Saturday at 6:15 p.m. ET.
