LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University track and field team competed at the University of Kentucky Rod McCravy Invitational this weekend. Senior
Joseph Maina and sophomore
Shannon Davis provided the highlights for the Colonels, as Maina finished third in the mile run and Davis placed third in the 200 meters and fifth in the 60 meter dash.
Maina completed the mile in 4:10.59, losing only to Furman’s Patrick Morgan and Middle Tennessee’s Festus Chemaoi. The senior also finished eighth in the 800 meters with a time of 1:52.39, the fastest 800 meter time in 2009 for the Colonels.
Davis placed third in the 200 meters with a time of 21.55. The sophomore also placed fourth in the preliminaries of the 60 meter dash and then finished fifth in the finals with a time of 6.76. It was the 2008 OVC Freshman of the Year’s first official meet of 2009.
Sophomore
Evans Kiptoo also delivered a noteworthy performance on Saturday, finishing fourth in the 3,000 meters with a time of 8:11.32. The time was the fastest in 2009 for the Colonels and the second fastest in the history of EKU.
Other notable Colonel performances at the meet included sophomore
Katherine Pagano and senior
Alli McMaster placing ninth and tenth in the 3,000 meters with times of 10:07.33 and 10:08.89, respectively; senior
Iceca Epps' 10th place finish in the finals of the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.67; and freshman
Diamond Benjamin's 14th place performance in the finals of 60 meter dash with a time of 7.72.
Notable teams present at the meet were Kentucky, Louisville, Cincinnati, Memphis, Alabama, Mississippi State, Vanderbilt and Western Kentucky.
The EKU track and field team returns to action on February 13 at the Hoosier Hills Open in Bloomington, Ind.
