OXFORD, Ohio – Eastern Kentucky jumped out to a 1-0 lead but couldn’t hold off Miami (Ohio) today and lost 7-2. The Colonels (16-24) trailed by one in the fifth before the Redhawks (28-20) scored four runs to secure the win.
Diane Gallagher’s double to left center in the bottom of the second scored the game’s first run for EKU. Miami (Ohio) tied the game in the bottom half of the inning with a RBI single by Jenna McGivney.
In the bottom of the fourth, an RBI single by Kelly Cabana and an RBI fielder’s choice by Alexis Javier gave the Redhawks a 3-1 lead. Pam Webber’s runs scoring single in the top of the fifth cut the deficit to one, but the Colonels wouldn’t get any closer.
In the bottom of the fifth, Alicia Hogl hit a grand slam home run to put the game away.
Gallagher finished 2-for-4 with an RBI for Eastern. Hogl had two hits in three at bats to go along with her four RBIs and a run scored.
Miami’s Meredith Linch (9-7) allowed one earned run and scattered six hits over five innings. She walked three and struck out two. Eastern’s
Stacye Toups allowed four earned runs on eight hits in six innings.
The Colonels are scheduled to face No. 18 Louisville on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
