RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University men's track and field team took second place while the women's team took sixth place this weekend at the OVC Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Tom Samuels Track on EKU's campus.
Six Colonels won individual titles at the championships, including sprinter Shannon Davis, who finished the weekend as the male high scorer of the meet. The sophomore, last year’s OVC Male Freshman of the Year, won the men’s 400 meters with a time 47.50, placed second in the men’s 200 meters with a time of 21.53 and took third in the men’s 100 meters with a mark of 10.87. He scored 25 points for the second-place Colonels.
The other Colonels who won individual titles at the meet were junior Stanley Mugo (men's 3,000 meters steeplechase), sophomore Katherine Pagano (women's 10,000 meters), senior Joseph Maina (men's 1,500 meters), sophomore Evans Kiptoo (men's 5,000 meters) and junior Andre Evans (men's 110-meter hurdles).
The Eastern Illinois men’s and women’s teams won the OVC Outdoor Track and Field championships. The Panther men’s squad scored 227 points, defeating its nearest opponent, host Eastern Kentucky, by 86 points. The women’s team scored 188 points, edging second place Southeast Missouri State by only 33 points.
Saturday’s win marked the tenth the time the Eastern Illinois men’s team has won the OVC outdoor championships since joining the league in 1997. The Panthers won eight straight titles from 1997-2004. It is the Panther women’s second OVC outdoor crown. Their only other title came in 2007.
After the meet, EIU head coach Tom Akers was named the Men’s and Women’s Coach of the Year. The award was the tenth of Akers’s storied career at EIU.
EIU freshman sprinter Zye Boey earned Male Athlete of the Championships honors. Boey won the men’s 100 meters with a regional qualifying time of 10.30 and then won the men’s 200 meters with a mark of 21.09. He was also a member of EIU’s winning 4x100 and 4x400 meter relay teams. Earlier this week, Boey was named OVC Co-Male Athlete of the Year along with Mugo.
Murray State junior Taylor Crawford was named the Female Athlete of the Championships after winning the women’s 800 meters with a time of 2:13.71 and then earning another individual title in the women’s 1,500 meters with a mark of 4:31.97. Crawford was also named the OVC Female Track Athlete of the Year earlier this week.
Jacksonville State’s Ebony Brisky finished the day as the female high scorer of the championships. The multi-dimensional senior finished second in the women’s high jump (5-04.25), second in the women’s long jump (19-02.50), fifth in the women’s triple jump (36-06.25) and sixth in the women’s 100-meter hurdles (15.00).
EIU’s Ian Winston also delivered an outstanding performance over the weekend, winning both the men’s high jump with a leap of 6-08.00 and the men’s triple jump with a jump of 46-00.00.
EIU’s Chandra Golden (women’s 100-meter hurdles, women’s 400-meter hurdles) and Shawana Smith (women’s 100 meters, women’s 200 meters) and SEMO’s Ashley Brewer (women’s shot put, women’s discus) also won two individual titles each.
On the men’s side, EIU finished the day in first place with 227 points. Eastern Kentucky (141 points), Southeast Missouri State (124 points), Tennessee State (45 points), Texas-Pan American (36 points) and Morehead State (six points) rounded out the standings.
For the women, EIU scored 188 points in its championship effort. Southeast Missouri State (155 points), Murray State (91.5 points), Jacksonville State (78.5 points), Austin Peay (76.5 points), Eastern Kentucky (72 points), Tennessee State (52 points) and Tennessee Tech (25.5 points) rounded out the standings.
The following are brief summaries of each final during the championships…
Friday
3,000 meters steeplechase – Mugo won the men’s race with a time of 9:11.94, defeating his nearest competitor by nearly 12 seconds. SEMO’s Juli Koenegstein took the women’s title, edging Murray State’s Katelyn Jones with a time of 10:45.45.
10,000 meters – EIU’s Brad Butler took the men’s crown with a mark of 32:06.54, defeating SEMO’s Brandon Karcher (32:10.82) and EKU’s Josephat Melly (32:11.94). Pagano won the women’s title in a close one, recording a time of 38:21.07 and edging her closes competitor, Tennessee Tech’s Tiffany Palmer, by only three seconds.
High Jump – Winston won the individual title with a jump of 2.03 meters, while EKU senior Jordan Sharpe took third place with a leap of 1.98 meters. On the women’s side, Nicole Walcott completed the Panther sweep of the event with a winning leap of 1.64 meters.
Javelin – SEMO controlled the javelin events on Friday as Richard Martin won the men’s championship with a heave of 51.34 meters and Samantha Espiricueta won the women’s title with a throw of 44.17 meters.
Long Jump – The Tennessee State Tigers and Tigerbelles, meanwhile, dominated the long jump events. Darrel Beal won the men’s long jump with a jump of 7.08 meters while Martinique Guice took the women’s crown with a jump of 6.29 meters.
Shot Put – SEMO continued to dominate throwing events as Josh Uchtman and Brewer won individual titles in the shot put. Uchtman won with a throw of 15.86 meters while Brewer cruised with a heave of 15.42 meters.
Saturday
100 meters –Boey edged teammate Brandon Jelks and Davis with a regional-qualifying time of 10.30 to win one of his two individual titles on the day. For the women, Smith won with a time of 11.80, clipping EKU’s Diamond Benjamin, the OVC Female Freshman of the year, by only fourth-tenths of a second.
200 meters – Boey won his second title of the day, recording a time of 21.09. Davis was right behind him with a time of 21.53. Smith also won her second individual crown of the championships, placing first in the women’s race with a time of 24.17.
400 meters – Davis won his only individual title in a race he just started running at the collegiate level last weekend. He recorded a time of 47.50 in the winning effort. Austin Peay’s Chiamaka Obi took the women’s title with a time of 56.52.
800 meters – Texas-Pan American’s Wally Gonzales won the title with a time 1:51.91. Two-time defending champion, Elkana Kurgat of EKU, finished third with a time of 1:52.90. Crawford, meanwhile, won the women’s race with a time of 2:13.71.
1,500 meters – Maina won the men’s race with a time of 3:53.47, edging Texas-Pan American’s Omar Doria by less than a second. Crawford also won the women’s 1,500 meters with a time of 4:31.97, beating her nearest competitor, EKU senior Katy Ankrom, by nearly six seconds.
5,000 meters – Kiptoo won his first individual outdoor title in the men’s race with a time of 14:40.51, upsetting teammate and defending champion Maina by just over a second. Mugo and EKU sophomore David Mutuse finished third and fourth, respectively. On the women’s side, Murray State sophomore Katelyn Jones cruised to the title with a mark of 16:57.06, defeating her nearest opponent by almost 50 seconds.
110/100-meter hurdles – Evans won his only title of the meet in this event, recording a time of 14.76 in the men’s race. Golden, meanwhile, won her third-straight title in this event on Saturday with a time of 13.98.
400-meter hurdles – EIU’s Kris Gehrke ran a regional-qualifying time of 52.09 for the win as the Panthers placed the top four finishers in the men’s race. EIU had just as much success on the women’s side as Golden won her second title of the day with a time of 1:01.49.
4x100 meter relay – EIU won the men’s race with a time of 41.54, barely beating Southeast Missouri State’s time of 41.63. The Panthers also beat out SEMO in the women’s race with a time of 46.64.
4x400 meter relay – The Panthers continued their dominance of the day’s relays as EIU won the men’s race with a time of 3:12.71 and the women’s race with a time of 3:48.97.
Triple Jump – Winston won his second individual title of the championships with a leap of 46-00.00 while SEMO’s Shemeika Brewer took the women’s crown with a jump of 38-05.00.
Discus – SEMO’s Brandon Colbert won the men’s competition with a toss of 178-07, beating teammate Josh Uchtman’s 161-05 by a long shot. Brewer won her second throwing event of the weekend in the women’s competition with a throw of 153-09.
Pole Vault – EIU’s Joe Noonan won the men’s competition with a vault of 13-00.25 while APSU’s Carrie Burggraf won her second straight individual title in the women’s pole vault with a vault of 12-04.00.
