RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University women’s soccer team will open conference play on Sunday at Austin Peay at 2:00 p.m. The Colonels (3-6-0) shut out the Governors, 3-0, last year at EKU Soccer Field.
Sophomore midfielder
Heather Bruce scored the game-winner in the 53rd minute of last year’s matchup with APSU. Junior forward
Alex Hartwick also contributed a goal and junior midfielder
Courtney Nestor recorded her first career assist in the game.
It was EKU’s first conference win of 2008 and it propelled the Colonels to six wins in their last seven games.
The 2009 Colonels have lost three straight, but all three losses have come during a very challenging non-conference portion of EKU’s schedule, including a game at seventh-ranked Florida.
Senior forward
Lauren Imsande leads the Colonels with three goals and one assist for a total of seven points. All three of Imsande’s goals have been game-winners.
Bruce, meanwhile, has recorded one goal to go along with a team best three assists while junior midfielder
Carly Muller has two assists and scored the Colonels’ lone goal in the loss to reigning SEC champion Florida last weekend.
Steady junior keeper
Stephanie Lynch has recorded two shutouts in five starts this season.
APSU enters the weekend with a record of 1-7-1.
The Lady Govs are led by Kellie Cannon’s two goals this year. Lauren Moon and Monique Wong, meanwhile, have both recorded a goal and an assist in 2009.
EKU is 2-1-1 against APSU and 1-3 in OVC openers since the program’s inception in 2005.
Following this Sunday’s matchup at Austin Peay, the Colonels’ next game will be at home on Oct. 2 against Tennessee Tech.
