Colonels Knock Off Second Place Austin Peay, Again

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. –
When the two teams met almost two weeks ago, Eastern Kentucky beat Austin Peay, which was tied for second at the time, in five games. On Saturday Austin Peay entered the match in sole possession of second place one day after beating Ohio Valley Conference leader Morehead State, this time the Colonels knocked off the Lady Govs 3-1.

Now EKU, winners of five straight, and Austin Peay are tied for second in the conference standings, two games behind Morehead State. Eastern improved to 7-3 in the OVC and 8-11 overall. APSU is also 7-3 in the conference and 16-5 overall.

The Colonels won the first two sets, 28-26 and 25-19. The Lady Govs took the third set 25-21 to stay alive, but EKU finished off the match with a 25-22 victory in the fourth set.

Eastern’s Ashley Edmond and Austin Peay’s Ilyanna Hernandez each recorded a match-best 16 kills. Edmond had just three errors in 35 attempts for a .371 attack percentage. Hernandez hit .195 but added 11 digs.

Autumn Harms led EKU with seven total blocks. The Colonels out-blocked the Lady Govs 10-3. Freshman setter Robyn Hench had four total blocks to go along with 38 assists, four kills and 13 digs. Senior Lauren Snyder finished with 14 kills and 12 digs.

For the second straight match, the Colonels benefited from their opponents service errors. Austin Peay held a 55 to 52 edge in kills but committed 14 service errors. On Friday, Tennessee State had 16 service errors against EKU.

The Colonels continue a stretch of four straight road matches next weekend at Jacksonville State and Tennessee Tech. EKU and the Gamecocks will play at 8 p.m. ET on Friday.
