RICHMOND, Ky. – Eastern Kentucky University punter
Jordan Berry was named The Sports Network/Fathead.com National FCS Freshman of the Week and Ohio Valley Conference Co-Specialist of the Week after his stellar performance at UT Martin Saturday.
Berry, a native of Essendon, Victoria, Australia, boomed a 75-yard punt to the UT Martin three-yard line early in the third quarter of yesterday’s game. That punt was three yards shy of the EKU record set by Bob Plotts in 1966 (78 yards).
In the 10-7 loss to UT Martin, Berry punted six times for an average of 52.3 yards. Four of Berry’s six punts landed inside the UTM 20-yard line. The redshirt freshman also converted a 4th-and-11 play versus the Skyhawks by avoiding a tackle near the first-down marker and finishing with a 14-yard run.
The Colonels currently rank second nationally in FCS with a net punting average of 40.9 yards.
Berry shared OVC Specialist honors with Eastern Illinois’ Rashad Haynes who became the first EIU player to return a punt for a touchdown in nearly six years as he scored on a 46-yard return in the first quarter against Tennessee Tech.
The other weekly award winners were Southeast Missouri’s Henry Harris (Offensive), Tennessee Tech’s Caleb Mitchell and Marcus Edwards (Defensive), and Tennessee Tech’s Jocques Crawford (Newcomer).
The Colonels (2-4, 1-1 OVC) are on the road next Saturday, Oct. 23 at OVC leader Southeast Missouri. Game time is set 2 p.m. ET.
