RICHMOND, Ky. – Eastern Kentucky University’s
Marie Carpenter was selected as the Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Week and senior
Reese Bass was chosen as the Co-Newcomer of the Week, the league announced on Monday.
In two games last week Carpenter averaged 18 points and seven rebounds. In Saturday’s 87-60 win over Brewton-Parker, Carpenter surpassed her career scoring high in the first half. She went 8-for-15 from the field and 8-for-9 at the free throw line to finish with 25 points to go along with a game-high, and career-high, nine rebounds. She had 17 points at halftime, one more than her previous career-best.
Earlier in the week at Florida Atlantic, Carpenter scored 11 points, grabbed five rebounds and had two steals.
The Freshman of the Week award is the first of the season for the Nashville, Tenn., native.
Bass shared this week’s honor with Karley Evans of Southeast Missouri State. This is the second time this season that Bass has been recognized as the top newcomer in the OVC.
In two games last week she averaged six points, four rebounds and 4.5 assists. While directing the EKU offense, Bass posted a 3-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio. Against Florida Atlantic Bass had six points, four assists and two rebounds. Against Brewton-Parker she totaled six points, two rebounds, five assists and had only one turnover in 33 minutes.
The Lady Colonels will begin Ohio Valley Conference play this week. On Thursday Murray State University will visit McBrayer Arena for a 5:30 p.m. contest. EKU will host Tennessee-Martin on Saturday.
