RICHMOND, Ky. – Eastern Kentucky University’s women’s basketball team will take to the road for a game at the University of Central Arkansas on Saturday. The Lady Colonels (4-4) will face the Sugar Bears (4-4) in Conway, Ark., before taking next week off for final exams.
The teams will tip-off at 3 p.m. ET.
This will be the second all-time meeting between the two teams. The first came last December when UCA escaped Richmond with a 52-47 victory. Eastern built a 12-point second half lead and led by 10 with 12 minutes left in the game, but the Lady Colonels scored just six more points the rest of the way.
Alex Jones led EKU with 15 points. Megan Herbert led the Sugar Bears with 20 points and 13 rebounds.
EKU is coming off a 75-66 home court victory over West Virginia State on Tuesday. Jones scored 31 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in the win and the Lady Colonels shot 52 percent from the field.
In recording her 10th career double-double, and her third of the season, Jones made 10-of-11 attempts from the field and went 11-for-15 at the free throw line.
Nadia Mossong finished with 12 points and nine rebounds for EKU.
Reese Bass scored 12 points and handed out five assists.
Central Arkansas is off to a 4-4 start to the 2010-11 season. The Sugar Bears lost three of their first four, including a 69-48 setback at Morehead State, but have since won three of four.
Herbert, a 5-foot-11 sophomore forward, leads the team in scoring (17.1 ppg) and rebounding (11.3 rpg). She has five double-doubles in eight games, which ranks fourth in the nation. She is sixth in the nation in rebounding. Herbert opened the season with 24 points and 14 rebounds against Hendrix and then had 20 points and 16 boards at Alabama. She had three straight double-doubles before playing only 21 minutes, scoring 10 points and grabbing five rebounds in UCA’s blowout win over Central Baptist in the Sugar Bears most recent game.
Sidney Stewart, a 5-foot-10 junior guard, is second on the team in scoring (12.1 ppg) and rebounding (4.6 rpg). As a team, Central Arkansas ranks fifth in the nation with an average of 8.7 three-pointers per game. Stewart leads the team with 18 treys. The Sugar Bears also do a good job of protecting the ball. They average only 15.1 turnovers per game and their opponents have accumulated only 5.3 steals per game against UCA. The team has the 19th best turnover margin in the nation (-7.8).
In their last game against Central Baptist, the Sugar Bears had 22 steals and Central Baptist finished with 34 turnovers. Desiree Rogers, a 5-foot-11 sophomore forward, hit all three of her three-point attempts and led the team with 17 points in 17 minutes on the court.
