Lady Colonels Dig Big Hole, Fall At Austin Peay

Eastern Kentucky closed a 14-point second half deficit to three, but couldn’t complete the comeback, falling at Austin Peay, 70-60, on Sunday.

The Lady Colonels (4-6, 1-2 OVC) got hammered on the boards to the tune of 47-29. The Lady Govs (3-9, 2-1 OVC) grabbed 22 rebounds off the offensive glass and scored 19 second chance points.

EKU sophomore Brittany Coles tied her career-high with 24 points. She missed out on her first career double-double by one rebound, finishing with a career-best nine boards. She also had four steals and two blocked shots.

Austin Peay scored first on a three-pointer by Darcie Warner and never trailed. The Lady Govs raced out to an 11-2 lead and built a 14-point advantage, 18-4, on the team’s fourth three-pointer in the first 10 minutes of the game. APSU also led by 14, 19-5, with 7:47 left in the first half.

A lay-up and three-pointer by Coles keyed a 7-2 Lady Colonel run to cut the deficit to seven points, 24-17, with 5:25 to play in the opening half. Austin Peay put a stop to the run and took a 32-19 lead into the locker room at halftime.

EKU turned the ball over 14 times and shot 6-for-18 from the field in the first half. Austin Peay knocked down 6-of-14 attempts from three-point range and held a 21-14 rebounding advantage, including nine boards off the offensive glass.

Warner entered the game averaging only 3.2 points per game. She made three treys and had 16 points at the break.

The Lady Govs built a 14-point advantage twice in the second half before a 10-2 run by the Lady Colonels closed the gap to six. Reese Bass hit a three-pointer to cut the deficit to single digits. Nadia Mossong’s lay-up and three-pointer capped the run and got Eastern to within 41-35 with 13:30 left to play.

Austin Peay stretched its lead back to 10 before the Lady Colonels used another run to close the gap to three. This time EKU out-scored the Lady Govs 9-2. Two free throws and a jumper by Shakeyia Colyer made it a 47-44 game with 8:26 showing on the clock.

That is as close as the visitors would get.

After scoring 16 points in the first half, Warner only had one in the second half. Nicole Olszewski led Austin Peay with 18 points.

EKU shot 50 percent in the second half and 43 percent for the game, compared to 33 percent for the Lady Govs. APSU was 9-for-26 from three-point range.

The Lady Colonels will conclude their two-game OVC road trip on Tuesday at Tennessee State. Tip-off against the Lady Tigers is set for 6:30 p.m. ET.
