Box Score vs. Canisius

CONWAY, S.C. –
Eastern Kentucky lost both games on the first day of the Kickin’ Chicken Classic hosted by Coastal Carolina University. EKU lost 10-1 in six innings to Jacksonville University and fell 14-6 in five innings to Canisius College.

In the first game against Jacksonville, the Dolphins scored five times in the second and added three more in the third. JU pitcher Olivia Kline held the Colonels hitless until the fifth inning when junior DeAnn Horswill hit the first home run of her career, a solo shot over the left field fence. It would be the only hit Eastern would register.

After Jacksonville scored twice in the top of the sixth to move out in front 10-1, EKU failed to score in the bottom of the sixth and the game ended by eight-run rule.

In the second game against Canisius, Eastern scored the first three runs of the game, but the Golden Griffins scored seven straight to take control. Ashley Dollins platted three with her second home run of the season to get the Colonels started in the top of the first. Canisius got on the board with a run in the bottom half of the inning and then added six more in the second. Paige Freiberger’s grand slam accounted for four of the six runs.

A sacrifice fly by Dollins in the third cut the deficit to 7-4, but CC added three more in the bottom half of the inning and Eastern never got any closer. Canisius put four more on the scoreboard in the bottom half of the fourth inning to stretch its lead to eight and the game ended after five.

Sophomore Diane Gallagher went 3-for-3 with two runs, an RBI and two stolen bases for the Colonels. Dollins finished with one hit in two at bats and four RBIs.

The Colonels will play Jacksonville at 4:45 p.m., and Coastal Carolina at 7 p.m., on Saturday.
