RICHMOND, Ky. –
Eastern Kentucky’s softball team jumped out to a 2-0 lead on Morehead State today, but the Eagles hit a pair of two-run home runs in the second and third innings for a 4-2 victory in the series finale between the two teams at Gertrude Hood Field.

Melissa Costa drove in the first run for the Colonels (12-28, 6-8 OVC) with an RBI single to right center in the bottom of the first inning. A second run scored after the ball was misplayed in the outfield and EKU had an early 2-0 lead.

Morehead State (20-16, 10-4 OVC) wasted little time getting even. With two outs and a runner on in the second, Ashley Archer sent a ball over the left field fence to tie the game. With one out and a runner on in the third, Kayla Brill doubled the run total for the Eagles with a two-run shot to left center.

EKU stranded seven runners over the final six innings.

Archer finished 2-for-3 with a run and two RBIs. Alex Gjevre (11-8) went the distance for the Eagles, allowing one earned run on seven hits and striking out 12.

Costa had three hits for Eastern. Samm Daniels went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Kristin Perry pitched four and two-thirds innings of relief, allowing two hits and striking out five.

The Colonels will take to the road this weekend for a three game series at Jacksonville State. Saturday’s doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. ET. Sunday’s single game is also set for a 2 p.m. start.
