BOX SCORE
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – SIU Edwardsville scored two goals in the first 17 minutes to surge past the Eastern Kentucky University women’s soccer team, 2-0, on Sunday afternoon at Korte Stadium. With the loss, the Colonels drop to 1-3-0 on the year while the Cougars improve to 2-0-0.
It is the first time in three meetings that the Cougars have defeated the Colonels.
SIUE jumped on EKU early as Devon Thomas, in the sixth minute, exploited one of the Colonels’ early season struggles: defending corner kicks. Thomas received a corner from Sarah Doggendorf and headed it in from about 10 yards out to put the Cougars up 1-0. EKU allowed two corner kick goals to Kansas on Friday night.
Just over ten minutes later, Chelsey Johnston took a pass from Brittan Bodziak and buried a shot from 10 yards out that gave the Cougars an insurance goal.
Despite the EKU backline holding the Cougars scoreless over the last 73 minutes, the EKU offense could not muster a response to SIUE’s two early goals.
The Colonels attempted a season-high six shots on goal during the game. Freshmen
Brittany Nomady and
Tess Akgunduz led EKU with two shots each. Both of Nomady’s shots were on goal.
Despite the loss, senior
Stephanie Lynch played all 90 minutes in goal and made a season-best seven saves.
Junior
Stephanie Murray and sophomores
Katie Collar and
Hayley Wright all played all 90 minutes on the backline for the Colonels.
EKU returns to action on Friday, Sept. 3, when they return home to host Wright State at 5:00 p.m. at EKU Soccer Field.
