Gameweek: Colonels Welcome Tennessee State to Roy Kidd Stadium for Homecoming

RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University football team looks to move its winning streak to three games Saturday when Tennessee State visits Roy Kidd Stadium. The 2011 EKU Homecoming game is set to begin at 3 p.m.

The Colonels (3-3, 2-1 OVC) have won back-to-back games thanks to a strong running game and solid defense. EKU has produced 618 rushing yards over the last two weeks including 358 yards from junior Matt Denham. Eastern’s second leading rusher on the season, junior Jeremiah Williams, will sit out this game with a knee injury. However, the Colonels still have plenty of depth at the position with seniors #H.B. Banjoman and Kyle Lumpkin# available to carry some of the load.

On defense, Eastern Kentucky is the only OVC team that has kept all of its opponents under 30 points. The EKU defense has forced at least one turnover in seven straight games and allows a league-low 18.8 points per game.

Tennessee State (3-4, 2-2) is riding a two-game winning streak of its own. The Tiger offense has exploded the last two Saturdays, averaging 48.5 points per game which includes a 55-3 triumph over Southeast Missouri on Oct. 8. Quarterback Michael German has not thrown an interception in 131 pass attempts this season. Last week in a 42-40 upset over then No. 19 Tennessee Tech, the redshirt freshman completed 19-of-29 passes for 232 yards and two scores. TSU leads the league in turnover margin (+9) and has forced a conference-high 17 turnovers.

Tennessee State has won two straight in the series, but the two teams did not meet last year. The Tigers notched two touchdowns on their final three possessions to rally for a 20-17 win in 2009. The two teams first squared off in the 1982 NCAA Division I-AA playoffs with Eastern prevailing in the semifinal round, 13-7. The Colonels went on to capture the national title with a 17-14 victory over Delaware in the championship game.

***All current and prospective Worn Cleat Club members are invited to a meeting Saturday (Oct. 22) at 12:30 p.m. in the Moberly Building (adjacent to Roy Kidd Stadium) Room 212.  We hope you will be coming to the Homecoming game with Tennessee State and can attend this meeting.  Go Colonels!!!

Storylines

--The Colonels are 7-4 in Homecoming games since 2000. Six of the 11 games were decided by a touchdown or less while the 2004 Homecoming contest against Murray State was decided in overtime.

--Junior QB #T.J. Pryor# needs 157 yards passing to move into third place on the all-time EKU passing list. Pryor currently has 4,539 career passing yards and sits right below Allan Holland’s mark of 4,695 yards. Pryor is also just 29 rushing yards away from the 1,000 career plateau.
