Gameweek: Colonels Face Jacksonville State Saturday in OVC Showdown

RICHMOND, Ky. – There is a three-way tie for first place in the OVC football standings and two of those teams square off Saturday afternoon – Eastern Kentucky and Jacksonville State. Game time in Jacksonville is set for 4 p.m. ET.

The Colonels (5-3, 4-1 OVC) are riding a four-game winning streak thanks in large part to their resurgent running attack. EKU leads the league and ranks 16th nationally in rushing yards per game (206.0). Over the last four weeks, the Colonels have averaged 297.8 yards per game on the ground. Junior RB Matt Denham is one of only two FCS players to have three or more 200-plus yard rushing games this season. He posted 219 rushing yards and two scores last week at Murray State.

No. 18 Jacksonville State (5-3, 4-1) is coming off its first OVC loss of the season, a 21-14 setback to Tennessee Tech on Oct. 29. The Gamecocks lost their starting quarterback, Marques Ivory, in the season opener, but sophomore back-up Coty Blanchard has stepped in and kept JSU rolling along. Blanchard has thrown for 1,147 yards and eight touchdowns compared to only four interceptions this year. Sophomore linebacker Rashad Smith paces the Gamecock defense with 56 tackles and one interception.

The all-time series between the two schools is tied at 4-all. Eastern Kentucky’s 49-37 win over No. 2 Jacksonville State on Nov. 6, 2010 was the program’s first over a top-five FCS team since Oct. 7, 1990. EKU ran for a season-high 233 yards, but turned the ball over three times in a 34-26 loss at JSU in 2009. Since Jacksonville State joined the league in 2003, no other teams have won more OVC games than Eastern (53) and JSU (52).
