JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – After taking more than a week off from game action, the Eastern Kentucky’s women’s basketball team will open Ohio Valley Conference play on Tuesday at Jacksonville State.
Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET. The live radio broadcast of the game is available in the Richmond area on WEKY 1340 AM, and can be heard worldwide on EKUSports.com. A live video broadcast of the contest is available on OVCSports.TV.
The Lady Colonels (4-6) last played on Dec. 10. EKU led by 12 at halftime and by 14 with 18:09 left to play, but three scoring droughts helped Miami (Ohio) stage a second half comeback for a 60-55 win.
Marie Carpenter led EKU with 14 points.
Jade Barber had 12 points. #LaRa`e Allen# contributed a team-best 10 rebounds.
Barber’s performance earned her a third straight OVC Newcomer of the Week award.
Eastern leads the OVC in three-point field goal percentage defense (26.3 percent) and blocked shots (4.0 bpg). EKU is second in scoring defense (61.7) and field goal percentage defense (36.2 percent). Individually, Barber and
Alex Jones rank among the top-10 in the conference in rebounding, fifth and seventh respectively. Barber leads the OVC in blocks (1.8 bpg) and is third in field goal percentage (57.5). Carpenter is second in three-point field goal percentage (46.9) and 10th in scoring (13.5 ppg).
EKU and Jacksonville State will meet for the 20th time on Tuesday. Eastern holds a 13-6 advantage in the series, but JSU has won three straight and four of the last five. The Lady Colonels are 5-4 all-time in Jacksonville. The Gamecocks won both meetings last season, including a 64-59 decision on Feb. 5 in Jacksonville.
Jacksonville State enters Tuesday’s game with a 3-9 record. The Gamecocks have lost three straight and six of their last seven. JSU lost on back-to-back days over the weekend at the Comfort Inn Classic hosted by North Florida. Jax State lost 79-52 to Florida International and 63-47 to North Florida.
Danielle Vaughn led JSU with 10 points against UNF. Briana Morrow added eight points and nine rebounds. The Gamecocks allowed the Ospreys to shoot 50 percent from three-point range and were out-rebounded by 18.
Morrow, a 5-foot-11 freshman forward from Nashville, leads the team this season with an average of 11.4 points per game and is second with 7.6 rebounds per contest. Senior guard Destiny Lane contributes 11.2 points per game. Vaughn, a 6-foot center, leads the team with 7.8 boards per game to go along with 10.4 points per contest. Candace Morton, a freshman from Lexington, Ky., leads the team in assists and averages 7.3 points per game.
As a team, Jacksonville State is scoring 56.8 points per game and getting out-scored by an average of 18.2 points. The Gamecocks have only made 26 percent of their three-point attempts and turn the ball over 25 times a game.
