Softball Falls In Championship Game At Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. –
Eastern Kentucky was tied with UNC Greensboro through five innings of the championship game at the First Pitch Classic hosted by Charlotte before the Spartans pulled away late for a 5-2 victory.

The Colonels drop to 2-3 in 2011. UNC Greensboro moves to 6-4 overall.

EKU jumped out in front on Cassi Gibson’s single in the top of the first that scored Diane Gallagher. UNCG tied it up in the bottom of the second on an RBI double by Heather Robb.

The teams remained tied until the Spartans put up a four-spot in the bottom of the sixth. Shannon McQueen scored on a UNC Greensboro error with one out in the top of the seventh to get within three, but the rally ended with a pair of fly outs.

Four Colonels recorded one hit each. Sophomore Kristin Perry started and allowed four earned runs on six hits in five innings. She walked one and struck out three. Freshman Hannah Driver pitched one inning of scoreless relief.

The Colonels will return to action on Wednesday when they play at Western Kentucky. The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. ET.
