MARTIN, Tenn. – Eastern Kentucky lost to the Tennessee at Martin, 75-57, tonight. UTM knocked down eight more three-pointers and out-rebounded EKU by six.
The Lady Colonels’ loss to UT Martin, coupled with Tennessee State’s victory over Southeast Missouri, eliminates EKU from a spot in next week’s Ohio Valley Conference tournament.
Alex Jones led Eastern Kentucky (6-20, 3-14 OVC) with her 16th career double-double. The sophomore finished with 22 points and 10 rebounds. Heather Butler and Jasmine Newsome led Tennessee-Martin (18-10, 13-4 OVC) with 19 points each.
EKU scored eight straight to build a 21-12 lead with eight minutes left in the first half. However, the Skyhawks hit three straight three-pointers to key a 13-1 run to turn their nine-point deficit into a three-point lead, 25-22, with 3:45 to play before intermission.
Eastern Kentucky would never lead again. UTM took a three-point lead, 29-26, into the locker room at the break. The Skyhawks were 5-for-16 from behind the arc in the first half while the Lady Colonels made just 1-of-8.
Tennessee-Martin slowly built a double digit lead through the first six minutes of the second half. A basket by Beth Hawn with 13:44 left in the game gave the Skyhawks their first double digit lead, 42-32. UTM led by 10 or more over the final 11:10 of the game.
UT Martin finished 10-for-29 from long range while Eastern Kentucky made 2-of-14.
The Lady Colonels will conclude their 2010-11 regular season on Saturday at Murray State. Tip-off against the Racers is scheduled for 6:15 p.m. ET.
