CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Eastern Kentucky University’s softball team swept a doubleheader from Austin Peay on Saturday and in the process picked up the program’s 498th and 499th victories. The Colonels (15-9, 2-3 OVC) won the first game 5-3 and took game two by a score of 11-2 in five innings.
Eastern Kentucky’s softball program began in 1993.
Jane Worthington, in her 19th season, is the only head coach in program history.
In game one of the twin bill, EKU scored all it would need in the top of the third inning.
Christina Ciolek drove in the second run of the inning with a single through the right side.
Raquel Howes followed with an RBI double to left center.
Melissa Costa capped the four-run inning with a sacrifice fly.
The Lady Govs (4-22, 0-6 OVC) cut the lead in half in the bottom of the inning, but they would never get closer than two.
Howes and
Cassi Gibson each had two hits for Eastern.
Shyenne Hussey drove in two of the team’s five runs.
Noelani Esperas (6-2) picked up the victory in the circle. She allowed four hits, three earned runs and three walks while striking out four in seven innings.
The Colonels scored the first 11 runs of game two. With a 6-0 lead heading into the fourth inning, EKU scored five more times. Hussey had a two-run single before
Ashley Dollins capped the inning with a two run home run, her third of the season.
APSU pushed across two runs in the bottom of the fourth but couldn’t get any closer and the game ended by eight-run rule after five innings.
Kristin Perry (4-4) allowed five hits, two earned runs and three walks while striking out four in five innings of work.
Diane Gallagher went 3-for-4 with two runs and two stolen bases. Hussey, Dollins and
Larkyn Wood each went 2-for-3. Hussey, Ciolek, Dollins and Wood also drove in two runs each.
The Colonels and Lady Govs will conclude their three-game series on Sunday. First pitch in Clarksville is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET.
