Box Scores: vs. Sacred Heart I vs. Yale
KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Eastern Kentucky’s softball team concluded its trip to Florida with a split on Wednesday. The Colonels (13-6) lost to Sacred Heart, 4-1, before beating Yale, 7-0.
In the first game against Sacred Heart (4-5),
Cassi Gibson’s sacrifice fly tied the game 1-1 in the bottom of the third for EKU, but that would be the only run the Colonels would score. Annie Dreher’s three-run home run in the top of the fifth put SHU on top for good.
Three Sacred Heart pitchers combined for eight strike outs. EKU’s
Diane Gallagher went 3-for-4 with a stolen base.
Ashley Dollins finished 2-for-2.
The Colonels didn’t waste any time taking control in game two against Yale (3-1). Eastern platted four runs in the top of the first inning.
Raquel Howes got the scoring started with an RBI double down the right field line. Dollins drove in one with a single before two more runners scored on a dropped fly ball.
With the bases loaded in the fourth, Dollins was hit by a pitch, Howes scored on a sacrifice fly and Gallagher registered an RBI single to add three more to Eastern’s total.
Noelani Esperas (5-0) went the distance in the circle for the Colonels. She allowed five hits, did not walk a batter and struck out two. Dollins finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
Shyenne Hussey and Howes each scored twice.
The Colonels begin Ohio Valley Conference play this weekend when Jacksonville State visits Richmond. A doubleheader on Saturday is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. Sunday’s single game is also scheduled for 1 p.m.
