Box Score

RICHMOND, Ky. –
Tennessee Tech hit three home runs in a 10-9 victory over the Eastern Kentucky softball team in the series finale on Wednesday. The two teams had split a doubleheader earlier in the season in Cookeville.

Eastern (21-18, 8-12 OVC) jumped out in front with three runs in the first inning. A single by Ashley Dollins with the bases loaded platted the game’s first run. Larkyn Wood made it 2-0 with a fielder’s choice. A throwing error on an attempted steal by Wood pushed across the third run.

The Golden Eagles (16-18, 7-11 OVC) scratched the scoring column in the top of the third on Brittney Spalding’s two-run home run. TTU turned a one-run deficit into a two run lead with one swing of the bat in the top of the fifth. Callie Schmidt launched a three-run shot over the left field fence.

Eastern answered in the bottom of the inning. The Colonels closed to within one, 5-4, on an RBI single by Christina Ciolek. A two-run single by Dollins reversed the one-run margin in favor of the home team.

Schmidt’s second home run, this time a grand slam over the left field fence in the sixth inning, gave the Golden Eagles the lead for the second time.

Schmidt finished 2-for-3 three with two runs and seven RBIs. Melody Christian went 4-for-4 and scored twice for Tech. Spalding drove in two and scored three times.

The home squad attempted a comeback in the bottom of the seventh. Shyenne Hussey led off the inning with a solo shot over the right field fence. A Melissa Costa single and a Golden Eagle fielding error pushed across two more to get within one, but the rally ended there.

Cassi Gibson and Dollins both went 3-for-4 for Eastern Kentucky. Gibson scored twice and Dollins drove in three runs.

The Colonels will conclude their 2011 home schedule this weekend against OVC-newcomer Southern Illinois Edwardsville. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m., and a single game on Sunday at 1 p.m.
