Softball Falls In Home Finale

Freshman Christina Ciolek hit her first career home run on Sunday.

RICHMOND, Ky. –
Eastern Kentucky’s softball team lost its final home game of the 2011 season, 6-1, today to Southern Illinois Edwardsville. The Cougars completed a three-game sweep of the Colonels.

The Cougars (22-21, 14-7 OVC) started quick. With two runners on in the second, Paige Sheeder blasted a pitch over the left field wall. Three batters later, Rachel Coonrod smacked a two-run homer to make it 5-0.

Christina Ciolek’s first career home run, a solo shot, got the Colonels (21-21, 8-15 OVC) on the board in the bottom of the second. The two teams combined for just two hits over the final five innings.

Coonrod finished 2-for-3 with a run and two RBIs. Erika Taylor went the distance for SIUE in the circle. She allowed one hit, walked one and struck out eight.

Kristin Perry came on in relief in the second inning for Eastern and allowed just two hits, one unearned run and two walks while striking out six in five and two-thirds innings.

The Colonels will step out of conference play on Tuesday to face the University of Kentucky in Lexington. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
