Perry Tosses Eight-Inning Shutout, EKU Splits Doubleheader

NASHVILLE, Tenn. –
Sophomore Kristin Perry tossed an eight-inning shutout to lead the Eastern Kentucky softball team to an extra-inning victory in the second game of a doubleheader at Tennessee State on Saturday. TSU won the first game 7-3 before EKU captured the second 4-0.

Perry allowed just six hits, walked three and struck out nine while improving her record this season to 7-4.

The second game remained scoreless through seven innings. Raquel Howes singled with two runners on to give Eastern Kentucky (20-13 (7-7 OVC) a 1-0 lead in the top of the eighth. Another run scored when Ashley Dollins reached on a fielder’s choice. Christina Ciolek doubled the Colonel lead with a 2-run double to left center.

Perry retired the side in order in the bottom of the eight to complete the victory. Diane Gallagher and Melissa Costa each finished with a pair of hits for Eastern.

In game one, the Colonels struck first, scoring three runs in the top of the second inning, but from then TSU scored seven unanswered. Gallagher’s two-run triple got Eastern on the board. Cassi Gibson followed with an RBI single to put the visitors on top 3-0.

The Tigers (9-29, 3-12 OVC) staged their comeback with two big innings, scoring all of their runs with two outs in each inning. Kelly Troglin’s two-run double in the bottom of the fifth cut the deficit to one. Brooke Blackford followed with a game-tying single to left field.

Jasmine Dunston’s two-out RBI single in the bottom of the sixth broke the tie. Brittany Webb followed with an RBI single to make it a 5-3 game. Jalisa Bradley then capped the scoring with a two-run home run over the right field fence.

Troglin finished 3-for-4 with a run and two RBIs. Caitlin Eaton (6-11) earned the win after tossing seven innings, allowing three runs on five hits and striking out seven.

The Colonels and Tigers will conclude their three-game set on Sunday at 2 p.m. ET.
