RICHMOND, Ky. – Visiting Eastern Illinois put together a nine-run fifth inning to roll past the Eastern Kentucky University softball team Saturday afternoon, 17-2. Due to weather delays earlier in the day, the two squads will complete the three-game series with a doubleheader on Sunday.
Morgan Biel paced EIU (25-7, 12-1 OVC) by going 3-for-4 with a home run and six RBIs. Reynae Hutchinson and Hailee Hanna also added round trippers for the Panthers.
Raquel Howes provided the lone Eastern Kentucky (21-15, 8-9) runs with her eighth homer of the season, a two-run shot to left center in the bottom of the first which tied the game at 2-all.
Eastern Illinois took the lead for good in the third when Biel cracked a three-run home run to left field. Hutchinson chipped in with a three-run home run in the fourth before the Panthers exploded for nine runs in the fifth.
Amber May (12-3) picked up the win for EIU. After allowing two runs in the first, May limited the Colonels to just four singles the rest of the way.
The Colonel pitching staff allowed a season high 19 hits, which comes one game after allowing 16 hits to Morehead State on Thursday.
The start of the game was delayed three hours and eight minutes due to thunderstorms that passed through the region.
Sunday’s doubleheader is slated to start at noon, as opposed to the original time of 1 p.m.
