XENIA, Ohio – Sarah Gross’s goal off a corner kick in the 58th minute proved to be the difference-maker as host Wright State edged the Eastern Kentucky University women’s soccer team, 1-0, on Friday night at Athletes in Action.
EKU (0-3) outshot WSU (3-0), 11-9, in the game, but could not get one of those shots past Raiders goalkeeper Brooke McCurdy. Then, 13 minutes into the second half, Gross broke the scoreless tie when she scored on an opportunistic rebound following a corner kick.
“We are disappointed in the result, even though we were far more successful against Wright State this year than last year,” head coach
Lindsay Basalyga said.
The Colonels fell to the Raiders, 3-0, at home in 2010.
Freshman Stephany Ellison led EKU with three shots in only 38 minutes of play, while senior
Heather Bruce and freshman
Kaylynn Brown attempted two shots apiece. Bruce and junior
Hayley Wright took the Colonels’ only two shots on goal.
“We need to be more dynamic in the attack to create better goal-scoring opportunities,” Basalyga said. “I think our defense was solid, and they were unfortunate not to be able to clear the ball off the line on the corner kick that led to their goal.”
Junior
Deja Tennon, sophomores #Emily D’Italia
and Lauren Fant
and freshman Paige Larkin# played all 90 minutes on that defense. It is the second straight game those four have all gone the distance.
Freshman goalkeeper Annie Wickett made her second consecutive start and played all 90 minutes, allowing just one goal and making three saves.
EKU returns home on Sunday when the Colonels host Miami (Ohio) at 1:00 p.m. at EKU Soccer Field.
