Volleyball Drops Two At Pitt Panther Invitational

PITTSBURGH, Pa. –
Eastern Kentucky closed out the Pitt Panther Invitational with a pair of loses on Saturday. The Colonels (1-3) lost a close one to Rhode Island, 3-2, before suffering a 3-0 shutout at Duquesne.

The match against Rhode Island (2-0) was a back-and-forth affair from the beginning. URI took the first set 25-21 before Eastern tied the match with a 26-24 victory in set two. The two teams then exchanged a pair of blow outs with EKU winning 25-14 and then Rhode Island tying the match with a 25-15 victory in set four. The fifth set was like the first, a four-point margin with URI coming out on top 15-11.

Newcomer Kelsey Kuehner led the Colonels with a double-double, finishing with 14 kills and 10 digs. Robyn Hench added 11 kills and freshman Alexis Plagens contributed 10 kills. Freshman Dena Ott led all players with 26 digs and freshman Abbey Cvelbar had a match-best 40 assists.

Kayla Wilson led Rhode Island with 19 kills.

Duquesne (4-0) won by scores of 25-12, 25-18 and 25-14 in the second match. Sophomore Ashley Edmond had six kills and 12 digs for the Colonels. Liz Homan finished with a match-high 15 kills for Duquesne.

Next up for EKU is the South Florida Invitational next weekend. The Colonels will play Bowling Green at 11 a.m. and South Florida at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Eastern will then face Bethune-Cookman and Maryland Eastern Shore over the following two days.
