EKU Cross Country Defeats Marshall in Home Dual Meet

RICHMOND, Ky.
– The Eastern Kentucky University men’s and women’s cross country teams opened the 2011 campaign by defeating Marshall at the EKU vs. Marshall Relays on a hot, muggy Friday afternoon at the Wood Chip Trail. The men’s team scored 17 points to Marshall’s 46, while the women’s team scored 15 to Marshall’s 49.

The men’s field ran a three-mile race, while the women’s field ran a two-mile race. The top five finishers from each squad contributed to the team’s overall score in the dual meet.

Seniors David Mutuse and Lydia Kosgei kicked off their final cross country seasons on the right foot by winning the men’s and women’s races, respectively. Mutuse won the men’s race with a time of 14:31.90, out-distancing his nearest competitor (teammate Daniel Jones) by nearly 17 seconds, while Kosgei simply ran away from the women’s field, recording a time of 10:59.00 and defeating her nearest opponent (teammate Picoty Leitich) by over 30 seconds.

On the men’s side, junior Jones finished second with a time of 14:48.00, sophomore Adams Ronnoh was third with a time of 14:52.00, senior Alex Dreyer was fifth with a time of 14:57.00 and senior Peter Sigilai was seventh with a time of 15:08.00. Matt Schiffbauer was Marshall’s top finisher, placing fourth with a time of 14:53.00.

Several of the men’s top runners did not compete in the race, including reigning Ohio Valley Conference Male Runner of the Year Soufiane Bouchikhi and two-time first team All-OVC senior Evans Kiptoo.

On the women’s side, the top five overall finishers were from EKU. Junior Leitich finished second with a time of 11:30.00, junior Jackline Barkechir finished third with a time of 11:57.00, freshman Ann Eason was not far behind in fourth with a time of 11:58.00 and sophomore Hannah Miller rounded out the top five with a time of 12:05.00.

Leslie Thomas was Marshall’s top finisher for the second consecutive year, placing seventh with a time of 12:21.00.

The EKU women return to action on Friday, Sept. 9 at the Queen City Invitational. The EKU men, who are ranked No. 28 in the country by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, return to action two weeks from now on Saturday, Sept. 17 at the U.S. Naval Academy Invitational.
