Volleyball Beats Maryland Eastern Shore, Finishes Second

Sophomore Ashley Edmond earned all-tournament honors after leading EKU to second place.

TAMPA, Fla. –
Eastern Kentucky University’s volleyball team shutout Maryland Eastern Shore 3-0 on Sunday to conclude the South Florida Invitational in second place.  The Colonels went 3-1 at the event and improved their record in 2011 to 4-4 overall.

Sophomores Ashley Edmond and Kelsey Kuehner both were selected to the South Florida Invitational All-Tournament Team. 

EKU’s only loss in the event was a 3-2 setback to Bowling Green.  The Falcons went 4-0.

Edmond and freshman Hannah Burkle led Eastern Kentucky with 12 kills each against Maryland Eastern Shore (1-3).  Edmond made only one error and finished with a .393 attack percentage to go along with seven digs and four block assists.  Burkle posted a .455 attack percentage and contributed three block assists.

Freshman Abbey Cvelbar totaled a match-best 31 assists for the Colonels and Dena Ott had a match-high 19 digs.

EKU won by scores of 25-21, 25-18 and 25-12.  Eastern posted a .299 team attack percentage compared to Eastern Shore’s .130 hitting percentage.

The Colonels will conclude the non-conference portion of their schedule next weekend with three matches at the 2011 Owls Classic hosted by Kennesaw State University.  EKU will face KSU at 5 p.m. on Friday before taking on Alabama-Birmingham and Troy on Saturday.
