RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University football team hosts the high-octane Eastern Illinois offense Saturday as part of EKU Athletics Hall of Fame Weekend. The game will be televised nationally by FOX College Sports beginning at noon.
The Colonels (6-2, 4-1 OVC) and Panthers (4-3, 3-1) are two of the four teams that are at the top of the Ohio Valley Conference standings with just one conference loss. This is the fifth straight year every OVC team has suffered at least one league defeat.
No. 18 Eastern Kentucky has scored at least 40 points in two straight games. The Colonels might have to reach that number again to defeat Eastern Illinois. The Panthers rank second nationally (FCS) in scoring this year at 43.4 points per game. EIU has scored at least 50 points in three games, including a season-high 65 in an easy victory over Austin Peay on Sept. 29.
The Colonels have won five straight in the series while averaging more than 33 points per game. Last year, RB
Matt Denham burst on to the scene with 216 yards rushing and two scores in a 48-16 win. Senior QB #T.J. Pryor# earned his first collegiate start at Eastern Illinois in 2009. EKU won that game by a count of 36-31.
Prior to the start of the contest, eight former student-athletes will be honored as new members in the EKU Athletics Hall of Fame. The three football players in the 2012 induction class are: LB
Alex Dominguez (1979-82), OL
Kevin Greve (1978-81) and QB
Chris Isaac (1978-81).
Dominguez was a two-time All-OVC linebacker (1981, 82) while Greve was twice named an All-American (1980, 81) at offensive guard. Isaac guided the Colonels to two straight I-AA national title games (1980, 81).
The other Hall of Fame inductees are:
Charmaine Byer (women’s track & field, 1984-88),
Clay Elswick (baseball, 1983-86),
Teresa McNair (women’s basketball, 1999-2003),
Dave Quick (baseball, 1961-64) and
Garfield Smith (men’s basketball, 1964-68).
