WOODSTOCK, Ga. –
Eastern Kentucky University’s softball team looks to continue its strong start to the season this weekend at the Phyllis Rafter Memorial hosted by Kennesaw State in Woodstock, Ga.

The Colonels will face Indiana at noon on Friday and will play Georgia State at 4 p.m.  On Saturday EKU takes on Campbell and Southeastern Louisiana.  The Colonels close out play on Sunday against Alabama State.

Eastern is coming off a strong start to the 2012 season last weekend.  EKU went 3-1 at the Quality Inn Classic hosted by Troy, beat No. 5 Missouri and claimed the team championship.  Freshman pitcher Shaylon Robb was rewarded for her impressive debut by being named Ohio Valley Conference Pitcher of the Week.

Missouri is the highest ranked team Eastern Kentucky has ever beaten.  The previous best was a victory over No. 7 South Carolina in 1995.  Eastern’s 3-0 start to the season tied for the second best in program history.  The 2003 team started 5-0.  EKU also started 3-0 in 1997.

Robb played a key role in EKU’s upset of No. 5 Missouri.  She earned the win after pitching the final eight innings of the 10-inning game.  Robb allowed three earned runs, walked one, and struck out seven.

The Martin, Tenn., native made four appearances in the first week of her collegiate career.  She posted a 2-0 record and a 1.67 ERA.  Robb allowed just five earned runs in 21 innings while striking out 15 batters.  She did not allow an earned run in the first nine innings of her career.

Fellow freshman Katie Tackett had an impressive debut as well.  She led EKU with in hitting (.429), walks (3), slugging (.714) and on-base percentage (.529).  She tied for the team lead in home runs (1) and RBIs (5).  The freshman went 2-for-5 with two RBIs in EKU’s upset of No. 5 Missouri.  She also had the game-tying single in the top of the seventh against the Tigers.  She went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs in the season-opening win over Nicholls State.
