WOODSTOCK, Ga. – Eastern Kentucky’s softball team picked up two wins on Saturday at the Phyllis Rafter Memorial hosted by Kennesaw State in Woodstock, Ga. EKU (6-2) beat Campbell 9-7 thanks to
Larkyn Wood’s two-run home run in the top of the seventh. The Colonels downed Southeastern Louisiana 5-1.
Against Campbell (6-7), EKU platted three runs in the top of the first, including an RBI double by freshman
Katie Tackett, but the Camels scored one in the bottom half of the inning and six more in the second to move out on top 7-1. Kailey Farmer and Raven Lee each hit two-run home runs in the second for Campbell.
The Colonels battled back by scoring six unanswered runs, two each in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings.
Raquel Howes cut the lead to one run with an RBI single in the sixth. Moments later
Diane Gallagher scored on a Campbell throwing error to tie the game.
Lauren Mitchell led off the top of the seventh with a walk and Wood followed with a two-run shot to complete the comeback, her second dinger of the season and second in as many games. With the tying run on second base in the bottom of the seventh,
Leanna Pittsenbarger got a fly ball to end the game.
Pittsenbarger (3-1) came on in relief in the fourth and held Campbell scoreless over the final four innings. She allowed four hits, one walk and struck out three.
Carissa Reisinger went 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI for Eastern. Gallagher finished 2-for-5 with three runs and a stolen base.
Southeastern Louisiana (2-12) scored first and held a 1-0 lead into the third inning. When the Colonels finally got on the board, they scored four times in the bottom of the third. Tackett gave Eastern the lead with a two-run single up the middle. Mitchell drew a bases load walk and
Shannon McQueen scored on a wild pitch. Wood’s RBI single in the fifth capped the scoring for both teams.
Pittsenbarger (4-1) came back and pitched a complete game five-hitter. She allowed one run, walked two and struck out six. McQueen finished 3-for-3 with a run scored.
The Colonels will close out play at the Phyllis Rafter Memorial on Sunday against Alabama State at 1 p.m.
