RICHMOND, Ky. –
After playing its first 16 games of the 2012 season away from home, the Eastern Kentucky University softball team will play its first home games of the season on Tuesday at Gertrude Hood Field.  The doubleheader against Dayton is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.

The Colonels are 6-10 this season, but have faced one of their toughest schedules in recent years.  EKU has already played three teams ranked in the top-25, including a win in February over No. 5 Missouri.

The Flyers enter Tuesday’s games with a 5-9 record.

A host of newcomers have led the Colonels this season.  Newcomer Carissa Reisinger has the highest batting average on the team (.357) and is tied for the team lead with 14 runs scored.  Freshman Katie Tackett is tied for the team lead with three home runs, is second on the team with a .346 average and is second with 13 RBIs.  In the circle, freshman Leanna Pittsenbarger leads the team with four wins, 41 strikeouts and has the lowest ERA (3.50) among the team’s starters.

This past week, junior Raquel Howes had a stellar stretch against some of the toughest competition EKU will face all season.  During a seven-game trip to California Howes batted .333 with a .625 slugging percentage against a slate that included two top-25 teams in North Carolina and UCLA along with the likes of Long Beach, UNLV and Pittsburgh.  She had four doubles, a home run, eight RBIs and scored five runs.
