Eastern Kentucky University’s softball team opened the home portion of its 2012 schedule with two losses to Dayton on Tuesday. EKU (6-12) fell by scores of 5-3 and 2-1.
In game one, EKU tied the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the first on
Raquel Howes’ fourth home run of the season. The Colonels took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single up the middle by
Larkyn Wood.
The score remained 2-1 until Dayton put up three in the top of the sixth and a single run in the seventh. Carlyn Harlow had an RBI double for the Flyers in the sixth.
Eastern got one back in the bottom of the seventh.
Katie Tackett drew a bases loaded walk with two outs to cut the deficit to 5-3, but Dayton got the next batter to strikeout to end the comeback bid.
Six different Colonels registered one hit each.
Leanna Pittsenbarger (4-6) struck out nine in seven innings for EKU. She allowed three earned runs and only walked one batter.
Alysha Isaacson went 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI for Dayton.
UD jumped out in front 2-0 in game two after scoring a run in the first and another in the second. The Colonels loaded the bases in the third, but pushed across only one run on a single through the left side by Tackett.
Freshman pitcher
Shaylon Robb (2-5) did her part. She allowed one earned run over seven innings, walked three and struck out six.
Shannon McQueen and
Lauren Mitchell each finished 2-for-3. Isaacson went 2-for-4 with an RBI for Dayton (7-9).
The Colonels will return to action on Saturday against Southeast Missouri State. The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
