RICHMOND, Ky. – Eastern Kentucky and Southeast Missouri State split a pair of extra-inning softball games on Saturday. EKU won the first game 3-2 in eight innings, SEMO took round two by a score of 7-5 in eight innings.
In game one,
Katie Tackett’s fourth home run of the season broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth. Tackett sent a ball over the left field fence with one on to put the Colonels on top 2-0. SEMO had the answer in the top of the fifth. Brittany Smith’s two-run shot to right-center tied the game at 2-2.
The score remained the same until the eighth inning.
Diane Gallagher led off the bottom half of the inning with a bunt single and then moved to second on a bunt single by
Carissa Reisinger. A third straight bunt single, this time by
Raquel Howes, loaded the bases with no outs. Tackett stepped to a the plate next and drove a 3-2 pitch into center field to plate the winning run.
Tackett finished 2-for-4 with a run and three RBIs. Gallagher, Reisinger and
Christina Ciolek all had two-hit games as well.
Shaylon Robb (3-5) earned the win after pitching three scoreless innings of relief. She allowed two hits, no walks and struck out one.
Taylor Cowan went 2-for-3 for the Redhawks.
Larkyn Wood’s two-run home run in the bottom of the second inning in game two gave Eastern (7-13, 1-1 OVC) the early lead. A two-run shot by Howes in the bottom of the fifth extended the Colonel lead to 5-1, but the Redhawks did not go quietly.
SEMO (10-14, 3-2 OVC) platted four runs in the top of the seventh to send the game to extra innings. Renee Ketz had the game-tying RBI single. Kaitlin Wallace’s two-run home run in the top of the eighth proved to be the difference.
Howes finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a run scored. Wood went 3-for-4 at the plate with a run and two driven in. Cheyenne Gipson had a 3-for-4 performance for Southeast Missouri. Wallace finished 2-for-4 with two runs and three RBIs.
The two teams will conclude their three-game series on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Gertrude Hood Field. The Colonels will celebrate Women’s History Month on Sunday with special guest and EKU legends Dr. Martha Mullins, Dr. Agnes Chreitzberg and Sandy Martin.
