ATHENS, Ohio –
Junior Raquel Howes hit home runs in both games as the Eastern Kentucky softball team split a doubleheader at Ohio on Tuesday.  The Bobcats won game one 4-1 before the Colonels took the second game 9-0.

In game two, EKU wasted little time getting on the board.  After a lead-off walk and a stolen base, Melissa Costa doubled to center to drive in the game’s first run.  Howes, the very next batter, hit her second home run of the day, a two-run shot over the right-center field fence for a 3-0 lead.  Howes added an RBI single in the second inning to make it 4-0.

Howes went 2-for-3 with a run and three RBIs in game two.  In both games combined the junior was 4-for-7 with two runs and four RBIs to go along with her two home runs.

Freshman Lauren Mitchell had RBI singles in the fifth and sixth innings.  Freshman Katie Tackett drew a bases loaded walk in the seventh to drive in a run.

Costa finished game two with three hits in four at bats, two runs and an RBI.  Hannah Driver (1-0) allowed just two hits over five and one-third innings in the circle.  She walked two and struck out one.

After Ohio took the early lead with a run in the bottom of the first of game one, EKU responded in the top half of the third.  Howes hit her eighth home run of the season, a solo shot to tie the game.

The Bobcats pulled away in the middle innings.  A bases loaded single up the middle in the fourth platted one run and then Lauren Gellerman’s two-run home run over the left field fence in the fifth pushed the lead to 4-1.

Howes finished game one 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.

Eastern will conclude its three-game series with rival Morehead State on Thursday in Richmond.  The single game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.  The Colonels swept a doubleheader at Morehead State on March 21.
