RICHMOND, Ky. – With the game tied, two outs and two runners on in the sixth inning,
Melissa Costa’s two-run single proved to be the difference in Eastern Kentucky’s 5-3 win over Morehead State on Thursday. The Colonels complete the season sweep of the Eagles for the first time since 2007.
Freshman
Katie Tackett got EKU (14-16, 6-3 OVC) on the board in the bottom of the second with the first hit of the game, a solo home run over the center field fence. It was her seventh dinger of the season. Stephanie Etter’s two-out RBI single in the third tied the game for Morehead State (8-18, 2-9 OVC).
With the bases loaded in the third, an Eagle fielding error allowed EKU’s second run to score. With runners at the corners and two-outs in the sixth inning, Katie Raile singled through the right side to tie the game. With the bases loaded, Anna Sommer singled through the left side to give the Eagles a 3-2 lead. A second runner tried to score on the play but was thrown out at the plate to end the inning.
Larkyn Wood led off the bottom of the sixth with her fifth home run of the season to tie the game, 3-3. Later in the inning, with runners at second and third and two outs, Costa found a hole down the left field line to drive in both runners.
Shaylon Robb (6-7), who had come on in relief with two outs in the sixth, retired the side in order in the seventh to pick up the win.
Leanna Pittsenbarger started and allowed two earned runs on five hits in five and two-thirds innings.
Tackett finished 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI.
Christina Ciolek also had two hits in three at bats and scored a run.
Six different Eagles recorded one hit each. Katie Pfost (2-7) suffered the loss after allowing two runs in one inning of relief.
The Colonels continue their home stand this weekend against Austin Peay. Saturday’s doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. Sunday’s single game will also start at 1 p.m.
