RICHMOND, Ky. –
A solo home run by Larkyn Wood in the sixth inning led the Eastern Kentucky University softball team to a 3-2 win in the first game of a doubleheader against Austin Peay on Saturday.  The Lady Govs took game two 8-5.

In game one, the combination of Diane Gallagher and Raquel Howes staked EKU to a 2-0 lead.  Howes drove in Gallagher with a double up the middle in the first inning.  In the third she did it again, this time with a single down the left field line.

The Lady Govs tied the game in the fifth.  With two outs and a runner on, Jessica Ryan sent a 3-2 pitch over the left field fence.  Wood gave the lead back to the Colonels with a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth.  It was the senior’s sixth round tripper of the season.

Austin Peay put two runners on in the top of the seventh, but Shaylon Robb (7-7) induced a fly ball to end the game.  Robb came on in relief in the fifth.  She walked two but did not allow a hit over two and one-third innings.

Gallagher went 2-for-2 with two runs scored.  Howes was 3-for-3 with two RBIs.  Four different Lady Govs recorded one hit each for Austin Peay.

APSU jumped out to a quick lead by scoring four runs in the first inning of game two.  Lauren deCastro scored on a fielder’s choice for the first run.  Amy Mills drove in a run with a single down the right field line.  With two outs later in the inning, an error on a fly ball to left-center allowed two runs to come home for a 4-0 lead.

Katie Tackett got EKU on the board with an RBI double in the bottom of the first.  However, another EKU error on a fly ball in the second allowed Austin Peay to get the run back.  Ryan’s second home run of the day, and fifth of the season, pushed the visitors lead to 6-1 in the fourth.

Eastern Kentucky (15-17, 7-4 OVC) climbed back into the game with three runs in the fourth.  Gallagher drove in a pair with a double to right-center.  Gallagher latter scored on an error to make it 6-4, but that is as close as the Colonels would get.

Tackett and Cheyanne Pounds both went 2-for-3 for Eastern.  Mills was 3-for-4 with a run and two RBIs for Austin Peay (11-17, 5-9 OVC).  deCastro finished 1-for-3 with three runs scored.  Taylor Mills (1-2) earned the win after allowing one run on two hits in three and one-third innings of relief.

The Colonels and Lady Govs will conclude their three-game series on Sunday at 1 p.m.  The Eastern Kentucky softball team will kick off Autism Awareness Month by doing its part to raise awareness for the fight against autism on Sunday.  EKU softball’s “Autism Awareness Day” will be held in conjunction with the Colonels’ series finale against Austin Peay.

Special guests EKU President Dr. Doug Whitlock and his wife Joanne will throw out the ceremonial first pitch.  The Colonels will wear special autism awareness jerseys on Sunday.  The EKU softball team will also hold a silent auction.  Auction items will be on display during Saturday and Sunday’s games.  Proceeds from the auction will go to the Robert Douglas Whitlock Jr. Fund For Autism.
