List of Men's Qualifiers I List of Women's Qualifiers I Final Regional Rankings
RICHMOND, Ky. – Eastern Kentucky University distance runners
Soufiane Bouchikhi and
Lydia Kosgei will compete in the men’s and women’s 5,000 meters at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in Nampa, Idaho this weekend. The NCAA revealed its list of participants late Monday night.
Bouchikhi and Kosgei are the first EKU runners to qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships since former Colonel All-American Jacob Korir finished second in the 10,000 meters at the 2008 championships.
With the qualifications, the EKU men’s track and field team finished the indoor season ranked No. 10 in the Southeast Region, ahead of such rivals as Western Kentucky (No. 13) and Kentucky (No. 14), while the EKU women finished at No. 11, ahead of WKU (No. 14).
Bouchikhi, the two-time defending OVC Male Cross Country Runner of the Year who led the EKU men’s cross country team to the NCAA Championships for the first time in school history in the fall, qualified for the men’s 5,000 meters with the school-record 13:46.06 he ran at the Washington Husky Classic in February. The junior from Antwerp, Belgium is currently ranked No. 12 in the field of 16 elite distance runners.
Kosgei, who was a cross country All-American last fall and an honorable mention All-American in the outdoor 5,000 meters last spring, qualified for the women’s 5,000 meters with the school-record 16:03.66 she also ran at the Washington Husky Classic. The senior from Eldoret, Kenya will try to end her decorated career by earning indoor All-American honors, as she is ranked No. 16 in the field of 16 runners.
Senior
Peter Sigilai barely missed qualifying for the championships in the men’s 800 meters. Sigilai, a senior from Longisa, Kenya, ran a school-record 1:48.58 at the Alex Wilson Invitational last weekend at Notre Dame. The last qualifier in the men’s 800 meters qualified with a time of 1:48.56.
The men’s 5,000 meters is scheduled for 10 p.m. EST on Friday, March 9, with the women’s 5,000 meters immediately following.
