RIVERSIDE, Calif. –
Eastern Kentucky University’s softball team lost both games of a doubleheader on Wednesday at the University of California Riverside.  EKU lost the first game 7-6 and the second game by a score of 16-8 in six innings.

Eastern’s comeback came up one run short in game one.  Riverside had a 7-2 lead after five innings.  However, the Colonels attempted to rally in the sixth.  Raquel Howes got the scoring started with a one-out RBI double to center field.  Katie Tackett followed with a two-run home run.  With two outs and two on, Larkyn Wood singled to center to drive in one and cut the deficit to 7-6, but the rally ended there.

Howes finished 2-for-4 with two runs, two RBIs and her third home run of the season.  Tackett’s one hit in three at bats was also her third home run of the season.

Game two was a seesaw battle for five innings.  EKU jumped out to a 2-1 lead.  UCR went on top 3-2.  After the Colonels tied the score, Riverside scored four in the bottom of the third for a 7-3 lead.  Eastern platted five over the next two innings to move back on top 8-7.  However, UCR tied it with a run in the bottom of the fifth and then scored eight in the bottom of the sixth to end the game.

After falling behind 7-3, Eastern Kentucky scored three runs with two outs in the fourth inning.  With the bases loaded, Howes ripped a double to left center to drive in all three.  EKU platted two runs on an error in the fifth to take its 8-7 lead.

Howes finished game two 3-for-4 with a run and four RBIs.  In both games combined, she went 5-for-8 with three runs scored and six driven in.  Diane Gallagher also went 3-for-4 in game two and scored twice.

Kayla White and Kaylie Atkinson combined to drive in nine runs for Riverside.  White went 3-for-5 with three runs scored and four RBIs.  Atkinson was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and five driven in.
