RICHMOND, Ky. –
Junior Raquel Howes tied school records for home runs in a season and in a career as Eastern Kentucky swept a doubleheader from Tennessee State on Saturday.  The Colonels (18-22, 10-9 OVC) won game one 8-0 in six innings and took game two by a score of 10-2 in five innings.

In addition to tying her own school record with her 13th home run of the season, Howes tied Shyenne Hussey’s program mark with her 28th career dinger.  In both games combined, Howes was 5-for-7 with six RBIs and three runs scored.

In game one, Eastern got on the board with two runs in the bottom of the first.  Katie Tackett’s single through the right side drove in one.  A ground out by Larkyn Wood was enough to push across a second run.

Howes’ record setting home run, a three-run shot, in the third inning made it a 5-0 game.  Cheyanne Pounds hit a two-run home run to end the game in the sixth inning.

Leanna Pittsenbarger (8-10) tossed six shutout innings for the Colonels, allowing four hits and striking out five.  She did not walk any batters.  Howes went 2-for-3 with two runs and three RBIs.  Diane Gallagher finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Four different Tigers registered one hit each.

Tedra Alford got TSU on the board first in game two with a solo home run in the top of the first.  Eastern answered in the bottom half of the inning, tying the game on a run scoring single down the left field line by Howes.

Alford made it 2-1 in the third when she scored on a passed ball.  Howes drove in another run in the third and Shannon McQueen plated a pair on a single through the left side to push the home team out in front 4-2.  Howes had yet another RBI in the fourth inning, driving in Nicole Heitz as part of a three-run inning to give the Colonels a 7-2 lead.

A single by Howes was misplayed in right field and allowed Heitz to score the game winner from first base in the fifth.

Howes was 3-for-4 with a run and three RBIs in game two.  Gallagher went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI.  Shaylon Robb (8-10) earned the win after pitching the final three innings.  She allowed six hits, on run, two walks and struck out three.

Alford finished 2-for-2 with two runs and one RBI for the Tigers (10-29, 3-17 OVC).  Savannah Gutierrrez, Ashley Haynes and Kate Morris also had two hits each.

The Colonels and Tigers will conclude their three-game series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
