RICHMOND, Ky. – Eastern Kentucky scored eight unanswered runs in an 8-2 softball victory over Tennessee State on Sunday at Gertrude Hood Field. With the win the Colonels sweep the three-game series.
The Tigers drew first blood, platting two runs in the fourth inning. Savannah Gutierrez drove in a run with a single up the middle. Moments later Gutierrez scored on a throwing error after stealing third base.
EKU (19-22, 11-9 OVC) had the answer in the bottom of the fourth.
Nicole Heitz drew a bases loaded walk to get the Colonels on the board and then
Raquel Howes was hit by a pitch to force in the tying run. The bases remained loaded after
Diane Gallagher scored on a fielder’s choice.
Larkyn Wood followed with a bases clearing double to right-center to make it a 6-2 game.
Another bases loaded walk in the fifth made it 7-2 in favor of the home team. A dropped fly ball allowed
Lauren Mitchell to score for a six-run lead.
Leanna Pittsenbarger (9-10) started and tossed six innings. She allowed two unearned runs on two hits, while walking two and striking out five. Six different Colonels recorded one hit each. Wood drove in three. Mitchell scored twice.
Gutierrez and Kelly Troglin each had one hit for Tennessee State (10-30, 3-18 OVC).
The Colonels will be back in action on Tuesday when they play a single game at Miami (Ohio). First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
