MIAMI, Ohio – Despite being out-hit 11-5 and striking out 12 times, Eastern Kentucky snatched a 2-1 win in 10 innings at Miami (Ohio) on Tuesday.
The two teams were knotted at 0-0 until the bottom of the fifth. With one out and runners at second and third, Megan Mattera singled to left field to plate the game’s first run. The second base runner was thrown out at the plate by
Diane Gallagher.
The Colonels answered in the sixth. A pair of Miami errors helped loaded the bases for EKU. With two outs,
Raquel Howes was able to drive in the tying run on a fielder’s choice.
The game remained 1-1 until the 10th inning, but the RedHawks put up a serious threat in the bottom of the ninth. Miami loaded the bases with no outs before
Leanna Pittsenbarger got two fly balls and a strike out to get out of the jam.
With two outs in the 10th Gallagher reached on a bunt. A fielding error off a ball hit to left field by
Nicole Heitz allowed Gallagher to score the go-ahead run from first base. It was the fourth error of the game by the RedHawks.
Miami got the tying run to second base with one out in the bottom half of the inning, but two line drives ended the game.
Gallagher had four of Eastern’s five hits, going 4-for-5, and scored both of the team’s runs.
Sophomore
Hannah Driver made her second start of the season for EKU. She allowed eight hits over four and two-thirds innings but only allowed one earned run. She walked one and struck out one. Pittsenbarger (10-10) earned the win after pitching five and one-third innings of scoreless relief. She struck out five and did not walk a batter.
Allie Larrabee went 3-for-4 for the RedHawks. Jessica Simpson (16-12) pitched all 10 innings for the home team. She allowed two unearned runs on five hits, walked two and struck out 12.
The Colonels continue their two-day, three-game road trip to the Buckeye state on Wednesday with a doubleheader at Bowling Green. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
