EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – In splitting a pair of games on Sunday at Southern Illinois Edwardsville, Eastern Kentucky won its third straight Ohio Valley Conference series. The Colonels lost 3-2 in the first game, which was suspended yesterday due to bad weather, before taking the final game of the series 4-1.
EKU jumped out in front quickly in game two.
Diane Gallagher led off the game with a single and advanced to second on an error. She then moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on an illegal pitch. The Colonels made it 2-0 in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by
Melissa Costa.
Katie Tacket gave Eastern some insurance in the seventh when she blasted a two-run home run over the left field fence. It was her 12th homer of the season.
SIUE attempted to rally in the bottom half of the inning. With the bases loaded and two outs, Alex McDavid singled to left to get the Cougars on the board. However, the next batter grounded into a fielder’s choice to end the game.
Shaylon Robb started and pitched two and one-third scoreless innings.
Hannah Driver (3-0) came on in the third and picked up the win after tossing the final four and two-thirds innings. She allowed one run on three hits, walked one and struck out one.
Gallagher finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Tackett was 2-for-4 with a run and two RBIs.
The two teams resumed game two of the series in the second inning. The game remained scoreless until the sixth. With one out and a runner at second,
Shannon McQueen gave EKU a 1-0 lead with a single through the right side. McQueen advanced to second on a ground out and then was thrown out at the plate trying to score on a Gallagher single to right.
With a runner on second and one out in the seventh, the Colonels doubled their lead on an RBI single by Tackett.
SIUE rallied in the bottom of the seventh. With two outs and two on, Whitney Davis singled to left center to cut the deficit in half. Lindsey Barron followed with a single down the right field line to tie the game. Jill Rackers then drove home the winning run with a single to center.
Leanna Pittsenbarger (14-13) kept the Cougars at bay for much of the game, allowing just two hits in the first six innings before giving up five in the seventh inning. She allowed three runs, walked two and struck out five. McQueen finished 2-for-3 with an RBI. Nicole Heitz went 2-4 and scored a run. Tackett had three hits in four at bats and one RBI.
Barron finished 2-for-4 with an RBI.
The Colonels will close out the regular season next weekend at home against Murray State. Saturday’s doubleheader will begin at 1 p.m. Senior Day will be Sunday with the first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
