MARTIN, Tenn. – Eastern Kentucky’s softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader against Ohio Valley Conference leader Tennessee-Martin on Friday. The Skyhawks captured game one by a score of 4-2 and took the second game 7-3.
In game one, the Skyhawks (28-12, 17-2 OVC) jumped out in front first, scoring a run in the bottom of the second. A sacrifice fly by
Diane Gallagher in the third tied the game and a solo home run by
Raquel Howes put the Colonels on top in the fourth. It was Howes 10th home run of the season, but not the last one she’d hit on Saturday.
EKU held the lead until the bottom of the sixth. With one out and two on Jenny Bain sent a pitch over the left field fence to put UTM on top for good.
Larkyn Wood had a multi-hit game for Eastern, going 2-for-3 with a run scored. Bain drove in all four UT Martin runs while going 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
The Skyhawks took the lead early in game two and never trailed. The Colonels climbed to within 5-3 on Howes second dinger of the day, a solo shot in the fifth, but couldn’t get any closer.
Howes was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI in game two. Lauren Smith led UTM at the plate with a 3-for-4 performance to go along with a run and four RBIs.
Saturday’s series finale between the two teams is set for a 2 p.m. start.
