MARTIN, Tenn. – A stellar pitching performance by freshman
Leanna Pittsenbarger led the Eastern Kentucky University softball team to a 7-2 win in the series finale at Ohio Valley Conference leader Tennessee-Martin.
Pittsenbarger (7-9) went the distance. She scattered five hits, allowed two runs, walked three and struck out four.
By winning the final game of the series, Eastern moves to 16-20 overall and 8-7 against OVC teams. UT Martin falls to 28-13 this season and 17-3 in league games.
EKU scored in the second and third innings to grab the early lead. A two-out single to right field by
Lauren Mitchell pushed across two runs.
Larkyn Wood made it 3-0 with a bunt single in the third. Two batters later
Christina Ciolek added two more with a double to left field.
Leah Taylor’s home run to lead off the bottom of the fourth got the Skyhawks on the board. The Colonels added two more to their total in the sixth on RBI singles by
Melissa Costa and
Raquel Howes.
Lauren Smith’s solo home run in the sixth accounted for UTM’s second run.
Mitchell finished 3-for-3 with a run and two RBIs. Wood, Costa and Katie Tackett all finished with two hits each.
Four different Skyhawks accounted for the team’s four hits.
The Colonels will return to action on Thursday when they travel to Tennessee Tech for a doubleheader.
