EKU Men and Women Finish First at Centre Track and Field Invitational

DANVILLE, Ky.
– The Eastern Kentucky University men’s and women’s track and field teams both finished first at the Centre Invitational on Saturday afternoon. The Colonels won 14 events at the meet.

The EKU men won with 168 points, defeating host Centre (161.5 points), Lindsey Wilson (94), Cumberlands (91), Campbellsville (84), Berea (76), Transylvania (23), Pikeville (11) and St. Catharine (7.5).

The EKU women won with a score 177, beating Campbellsville (159), Centre (147.5), Cumberlands (107), Berea (44), Lindsey Wilson (43.5), Transylvania (34) and St. Catharine (14).

Sophomore Ben Torotich and freshman Tanner Kendall led the way for the Colonel men, as they both won two events at the meet. Torotich won the men’s 1,500 meters with a time of 3:55.04 and the men’s 800 meters with a time of 1:56.52, while Kendall won the men’s long jump with a leap of 21-1 and the men’s high jump with a mark of 6-06.

Other winners on the men’s side included senior Gerry Cooper, who won the men’s 400 meters with a time of 49.40, and freshman #Turner O’Brian#, who won the men’s triple jump with a leap of 43-06.5.

For the women, freshman Ann Eason won the women’s 1,500 meters with a time of 4:40.84, sophomore Shiyana Mahendra won the women’s 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.39, junior Picoty Leitich won the women’s 400 meters with a time of 56.25, senior Diamond Benjamin won the women’s 100 meters with a time of 12.13, junior Bianca Forbes won the women’s 200 meters with a time of 25.68 and junior Jazzmin Jeter won the women’s long jump with a mark of 18-0.25.

The EKU women also won two relays, as Benjamin, Jeter, senior Morgan Thacker and sophomore Rashelle Florence combined to win the women’s 4x100 meter relay, while Forbes, Jeter, Leitich and freshman Erica Reaser combined to win the women’s 4x400 meter relay.

The EKU track and field teams return to action next weekend at the Tennessee Sea-Ray Relays and the Mt. SAC Relays in California.
