RICHMOND, Ky. – Eastern Kentucky University punter
Jordan Berry has been named as a member of the Capital One Academic All-District football team as selected by members of the College of Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Berry's name will now be placed on the Academic All-America ballot.
Berry is in his fourth year as a starter for EKU and can punt from a variety of positions; exceling at rugby style punting and also serves as the team's holder on field goal attempts. He is majoring in physical education with a 3.53 G.P.A and hails from Essendon, Victoria, Australia where he was a member of the Australian national team in the Junior World Championships of American Football.
The senior's 2013 Highlights include a 77-yard punt against Austin Peay which was one yard short of tying the school record set 1966. Against Southeast Missouri two weeks later, Berry scored his first collegiate touchdown on a 25-yard fake field goal in the second quarter. He also booted a 76-yard punt, two yards shy of the EKU record, in the first quarter. Against Morehead State, Berry punted the ball to a teammate to complete a lateral pass on fourth down. This play was posted to YouTube where it has accumulated over 1.4 million views.
To be nominated for Academic All-America honors, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) for his/her career. No athlete is eligible until he/she has reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at his/her current institution (thus, true freshmen, redshirt freshmen and ineligible transfers are not eligible). In the case of transfers, graduate students and junior college graduates, the athlete must have completed one full calendar year at the nominating institution to be eligible.
CoSIDA's Capital One Academic All-America Division I football team will be announced on Thursday, December 5.
Eastern Kentucky (6-3, 4-1 OVC), has three games remaining to conclude the regular season. The Colonels travel to Jacksonville State on Saturday, will host UT Martin in Richmond, Ky. on November 16, and will finish the regular season at Murray State on November 23. EKU will then wait to hear if it will be selected to make a 21st appearance in the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) Playoffs.
