NORMAL, Ala.
– The Eastern Kentucky University soccer team won its second consecutive game on Sunday, defeating Alabama A&M, 3-2, on the road.

With the win, EKU improves to 2-7-1 (1-0-0 OVC) on the season.

Two days after using an opportunistic second-half goal to shut out conference foe Jacksonville State, EKU was forced to ramp up its offense to secure Sunday's win. The Colonels outshot the Lady Bulldogs, 24-9, and attempted 13 more corner kicks than their opponents.

Freshman Cassie Smith got EKU on the board early, scoring her first goal as a Colonel just seven minutes into the game to make it 1-0. Senior Nikki Donnelly and junior Whitney Wallace both received an assist on the goal.

However, eight minutes after Smith's goal, Alabama A&M evened the score with a goal from Estelle Esperance. The teams went into halftime tied, 1-1.

In the second half, EKU took command. Wallace scored her first-career goal off an assist from Smith in the 53rd minute. Then, in the 62nd minute, junior Kaylynn Brown got in on the action, taking a pass from senior Katie Collar and making it 3-1.

Alabama A&M added a goal in the 77th minute, but EKU was able to hang on for the road victory.

"We are glad to have gotten this result," head coach Melissa Barnes said. "Credit to A&M. They fought hard. We created plenty of scoring chances and converted enough to win. We are finding the back of the net and will continue to improve our efficiency in front of the net."

Sophomore Erika Wolfer played all 90 minutes in goal for the Colonels and made two saves. EKU's entire backline of Collar, senior Lauren Fant, junior Paige Larkin and freshman Mikayla Brillon and senior midfielder Brittany Nomady also went the distance.

EKU returns to OVC action next weekend with games at SIUE and Eastern Illinois.
