RICHMOND, Ky. – For just the third time since 1991, the Eastern Kentucky University football team will take on in-state foe Louisville when the two teams meet at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium this Saturday. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN3 beginning at noon.
This is the 14th straight year that EKU has squared off against an NCAA FBS program. Eastern Kentucky is 4-18 against NCAA FBS programs since 1978 when the Colonels joined the ranks of NCAA FCS. EKU's last win against an FBS school happened in 1985 thanks to a 45-21 victory at Louisville. However, three of the Colonels' last five meetings against FBS teams have been decided by 10 points or less.
EKU (1-0), ranked No. 21 in the FCS coaches' poll, opened the season with a convincing 38-6 win over Robert Morris. The Colonels scored touchdowns on four of their first five possessions. Two EKU players recorded their first collegiate touchdowns a week ago. Senior TE
Nathan Watts caught a second quarter touchdown pass against RMU while junior RB
Caleb Watkins found the end zone right before the end of the first half.
Louisville (1-0), ranked No. 8 in both major FBS polls, crushed Ohio by a count of 49-7 in its opener. The Cardinals feature Heisman Trophy candidate Teddy Bridgewater. The junior quarterback completed 23-of28 (82.1 percent) passes for 355 yards and tied a career high with five touchdown passes. UofL limited Ohio to just 273 yards of offense, including a paltry 88 yards in the first half.
The previous two meetings between Eastern and Louisville (1991 and 2010) were each decided by 10 points. In 2010, Louisville head coach Charlie Strong picked up his first collegiate win as a head coach in a 23-13 win over the Colonels. The Cardinals have won nine of the last 10 meetings against EKU.
Following this game, the Colonels return home to face Coastal Carolina as part of Family Weekend on Sept. 14.
